Companies develop high-performance stretch films incorporating PCR content

ExxonMobil partnered with Winpack Group, a leading flexible packaging converter in Chile, to address growing demand for circular solutions that support the country’s Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) laws. Leveraging the ExxonMobil Signature Polymers portfolio, including Exceed and Exceed Tough performance polyethylene (PE), the collaboration aimed to develop advanced stretch films that incorporate high levels of post-consumer recycled (PCR) content without compromising film performance or processing efficiency. As a result, the team successfully produced manual and automatic seven-layer stretch films containing up to 50% PCR content. The films maintained critical mechanical properties, including stretchability, cling, and load containment. Vistamaxx performance polymers, also part of the ExxonMobil Signature Polymers portfolio, were used to enhance cling, ensuring film functionality in demanding logistics applications. Key results include the successful incorporation of up to 50% post-consumer recycled (PCR) content into films, while maintaining strength, cling and load stability with no compromise in performance. They are compatible with both manual and automatic stretch film applications, performing comparably to traditional virgin-based options. This advancement helps Winpack to process an estimated 300 additional tons of recycled material each month, enhancing operational efficiency. Furthermore, it allows brand owners to meet evolving market demands without changes to equipment or production processes. These results demonstrate how ExxonMobil Signature Polymers delivers high-performance packaging that matches virgin material quality without any compromise. To see the full case study, visit here.
